ATTENTION!!

We will be having a conceal carry course for ICD on September 18, 2011

The Institute for Career Development (ICD) is an understanding during the 2006 Master negotiations between the United Steelworkers  and Goodyear to offer and facilitate both credit and non-credit education programs offered by Washburn and Kaw Area Technical School (KATS) for USW Local 307 members. The ICD Local Joint Committee (LJC) provides members up to $1,500 per year in tuition assistance for accredited college courses and up to $2,000 per year for approved customized courses.

To be eligible to apply you must be an active member. A laid off member must apply within the first two years of layoff. A retired member must apply within the first year of retirement.

Credit Courses

Credit courses are academic courses that may lead to a degree and/or diploma. Individuals interested in taking academic courses at Washburn or Kaw Area Technical School must apply for admission:

Washburn: Apply online. The Admissions Office will notify you of acceptance by mail, but if you need to know if you can enroll for a course prior to your official notification, contact Lori Spurgeon at the Center for Undergraduate Studies and Program (CUSP) Academic Advising or call 670-2299.

KATS: If you are interested in the Day School Programs and/or nursing courses, contact Student Services by calling 228-6321 to schedule an Admissions Test . There will be an interview after the tests are scored to review the results and discuss your occupational goals.

Upon admission, you will be assigned a Washburn Identification Number (WIN). After you enroll for a course, submit your authorized tuition assistance form to the Division of Continuing Education. The Division will ensure that the proper signatures and student WIN number is on the form and will process the forms through the Washburn Business Office for payment.  If the tuition assistance is to be used for text books, the member shall take a copy of the DCE approved form to the Bookstore. Authorized book fees will be billed to your ICD account.

Customized Courses

Customized courses are usually short-term workshops or seminars that do not lead to a degree and/or diploma. Most non-credit courses offered by Washburn and KATS serve to enhance the knowledge, skills and attitudes of individuals for an improved workforce and individual growth and enrichment. The non-credit courses offered for the ICD are customized in that they are targeted to the Local 307 membership based on expressed interest and time.  A limited number of credit courses may also be offered. Registrations for these offerings will be done by special enrollment.

Customized courses require a minimum of five Local 307 member registrants. Courses with at least five members registered one month prior to its scheduled start will be opened to the public on a space available basis. Courses with insufficient enrollment one week prior to the start date will be cancelled. At least ten registrations are required to offer most courses.

It is important for you to contact the Division of Continuing Education as soon as possible if you cannot attend a course. The LJC will be billed for all registrations in the system as of one month prior to the course start date.

View the ICD customized courses on the course schedule. USW Local 307 Members can self-register and the Division of Continuing Education (DCE) will invoice the Local Joint Committee (LJC)

The Division of Continuing Education (DCE) at Washburn along with the Local Joint Committee (LJC) serve as  coordinators for the ICD. In this capacity the DCE and the LJC facilitate member access to appropriate institutional services, manages the customized courses, and tracks member participation and progress.
