Your Committees and Local Structure

COMMITTEES
All committees are appointed by the President with a vote of approval (from the membership at a monthly membership meeting). The only exception is the Grievance (Bargaining) Committee. All members are encouraged to notify the Union Hall if you would like to serve on a committee. These appointments are made after each presidential election. These committees are comprised of three or more members.
THE BARGAINING OR GRIEVANCE COMMITTEE
The Bargaining or Grievance Committee is a committee with the names interchanged. This committee consists of all the Division Chairmen, One Policy Committee Member, the Vice President and President. The committee serves two purposes: 1. To negotiate the LOCAL contract or supplement. 2. Process grievances. They normally meet once a week.
EDUCATION COMMITTEE
The Education Committee is to promote a broad educational program and encourage the membership to participate.
The various methods to accomplish these goals include, publishing a news letter (News &Views) that is mailed to the homes of all the members and retirees, an informational website and / or email server to improve communication between Officers and Members.
SAFETY COMMITTEE
The Safety Committee represents all contract units of Local 307 (plant, warehouse and American Food & Vending). The committee consists of five members, one from each Business Center of the plant, the crafts and the warehouse. The members are assigned to "their area", to monitor safety. One of these members is the Chairman of the committee and has full time duties of handling safety problems. Each Shift Steward should handle safety problems, along with the "Safety Contact" Department Personnel. These shift representatives report problems to and receive assistance from the Safety Committee.
UNION LABEL COMMITTEE
The Union Label Committee's main function is to inform all Union Members about a basic message: If Union Members buy what Union Members make, they protect and foster quality American jobs.
They do this by informing you of Boycotts on products due to unfair labor practices. Reminding you to buy Union and American made products with ads at the movie theaters, on bill boards around town, with radio commercials, and by staffing information booths at Topeka's GO-4th Celebration and the State Fair in Hutchinson.
In part, they are funded by a part of your Union dues and also by fund raisers such as shirt and hat sales.
The Union Label Committee is open to suggestions from any and all Union Members.
The Union Label Golden Rule: "Buy Union Products and use Union Services as you would have Union Wages Paid unto you." (Quote from Union Label Council Handbook).
MEMBERSHIP COMMITIEE
The Membership Committee responsibilities and functions are to make sure all new hire associates have the opportunity to join the Union. We approve new members and send their cards to the membership for approval.

The Community SeNice Committee is involved with many activities that help the community our members live in. They help with projects such as Project Topeka (Food Bank), the Christmas Bureau, etc. The committee also works closely with the AFL-CIO Community SeNice Labor Liaison and the United Way in programs like union councilors who train Union Representatives to help direct members in need of a special community agency.
ORGANIZING COMMITTEE
The members of this committee helps the USW International staff identify workers that would like to organize a Labor Union at their place of employment. The committee then will help the International run a campaign to gain recognition of that local unit.

The committee consists of the Maintenance Division Chairman and Vice Chairman and a Skilled Trades Committeeman who are elected, and four craftsmen from various classifications, who are appointed by the President.
The purpose of the Committee is to assist the Division Chairman in developing and administering the Skilled Trades Policy for the Local. The committee also participates in the International Skilled Trades programs, and processes Skilled Trades Card applications.
WOMEN OF STEEL COMMITTEE
This Committee shall assist in educating and supporting women involvement on union matters. They will share knowledge of organized labor and issues related to working women and create a coalition within the community.
X CONTRACTS &NEGOTIATIONS
USW Local 307 has three labor contracts: American Food & Vending (vending services), Defender Services Uanitor services), the Goodyear Plant and the Goodyear Distribution Center. Each of these contracts is separate and has differing expiration dates.
The Goodyear Plant and the Goodyear Distribution Center contract involves two different sets of negotiations -the Master and the Local Supplement.
This Master, among other items, covers economics (wages) and benefits (insurance, pensions). Immediately preceding the Master contract negotiations the Local Supplement is negotiated which addresses Local work rules.
The American Food & Vending Contract and Defender involves different companies (American Food & Vending -Not Goodyear). These contracts are independent of the Goodyear pattern.
Washburn University is an amalgamated unit which has their own contract as well.
The negotiations on all four contracts involve the membership with input on proposals (Le. how much increase in wages) and the members will be asked to authorize a strike before any strike action is taken.
No Union wants to strike, but this is a major tool (withholding our services) used in Collective Bargaining. Only those members working under each respective contract can vote on those actions.
You are the Union. You must be informed and involved and you can make a difference.
